While researching my family name (Miller, Muller, Milner) which I can trace back to about the 1660’s in Carinthia, Austria, I found some connection to families with the same name in the Eisack Valley near Klausen, as well as at Merano and the town of Lana where a Mulner married a wealthy duchess who possessed (owned) the town of Lana in the 1400-1500’s. Some of this family (the wealthy Miller von Aichholz who migrated to Vienna, Austria later), also moved into the Vale de Non and became known as the Millers von Cles. One young man of this family named Beppe Miller was with Andreas Hofer during the revolution against Napoleon in the early 1800’s.
What my question is, it there any way to trace if some of these Millers of the Klausen/ Lana/ Cles/ Aichholz relatives would have moved into Carinthia Austria in the early 1600’s either during the 30 Years War or shortly thereafter?
Hi Peter,
As you’ve mentioned many different lines, I am not exactly sure what you are asking me.
I am not familiar enough with the records for South Tyrol (Merano, etc.) or Austria to comment on those, as Trentino is my area of specialism.
Regarding the Miller of Cles, The earliest baptismal records for Miller in Cles were the children of the noble ‘spectabilis’ Giovanni Battista Miller and his wife Anna Maria Magri (of Cles).
According to his marriage record, Giovanni Battista was apparently from the city of TRENTO (according to his marriage record), not from Austria. He married Anna Maria Magri of Cles on 25 April 1674. [Cles marriage records, volume 1, page 89].
The specific honourific ‘spectabilis’ is an indication he was a notary. P. Remo Stenico (in his book on Trentino notaries) says Giovanni Battista was active in his profession at least between the years 1679-1719, however he is called ‘spectabilis in his 1674 marriage record so he was already a notary by then. He was also the chancellor of Flavon at some point.
Children I’ve found for this couple:
Cattarina – born 13 May 1675
Cristoforo Alfonso – born 24 July 1679
Francesco Alessandro – born 24 Dec 1681
Angela Cattarina – born 18 Dec 1686
Anna Cattarina – born 19 Oct 1690
Francesco Antonio – born 19 Nov 1708 (see below)
As there is a big gap, I’m presuming I either missed some, or perhaps there were some born in Trento.
Stenico lists 3 later Miller notaries of Cles (I have not researched these):
1. Francesco Antonio (active between 1746-1773) – son of G.B. and Anna Maria, above. He was born 19 Nov 1708.
2. Giuseppe Antonio (active at least 1719-1761), who was also a chancellor of Flavon. He married Anna Felicita Maffei (of Cles) on 2 Dec 1719. I would have thought he was the son of G.B., but his marriage record doesn’t say, and I haven’t found his baptismal record.
3. Vincenzo, son of Francesco (active between 1786-1817).
